Elon Musk has introduced Grok 3, the latest chatbot from his AI company xAI. He made the announcement during a livestream on X, calling it the “smartest AI on Earth.” However, Grok 3 is entering a competitive market where other AI models already have a head start.
What Are the Different Grok 3 Models?
Musk revealed that four versions of Grok 3 will be available:
- Grok 3 (standard version)
- Grok 3 Mini (a faster, more lightweight version)
- Grok 3 Reasoning (specialized for logical reasoning and problem-solving)
- Grok 3 Mini Reasoning (a faster but slightly less accurate reasoning model)
These models are trained using synthetic data and have the ability to self-correct by identifying inconsistencies. The Reasoning versions are designed to break down their thought process step-by-step and fact-check responses, making them ideal for math, science, and coding. The Mini versions prioritize speed over detailed accuracy checks.
How Powerful Is Grok 3?
Grok 3 was trained on xAI’s Colossus Supercluster, an AI supercomputer with 200,000 GPUs in Memphis, Tennessee. Musk claims it used 10 times more computing power than Grok 2, making it significantly more advanced.
During a livestream, Musk and the xAI team presented benchmark tests showing that Grok 3 outperformed leading AI models like Gemini-2 Pro, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, DeepSeek-V3, and GPT-4o in math, science, and coding. The Reasoning models also scored higher than competitors like o3-mini, o1, DeepSeek R-1, and Gemini-2 Flash Thinking in math tests.
These results were verified by AI benchmarking platform lmarena, which ranked Grok 3 #1 in all tested categories.
New Features: Introducing DeepSearch
Grok 3 chatbots can answer questions, analyze images, and generate content. They also come with a powerful new feature called DeepSearch. Similar to research tools from OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity, DeepSearch scans the internet, summarizes key findings, and cites sources.
Users can also enable special modes:
- Think Mode: Provides more detailed and accurate answers by carefully reasoning through a problem.
- Big Brain Mode: Uses extra computing power to handle complex, multi-step tasks.
Additionally, Grok 3 has real-time knowledge of the world through X, allowing it to explain posts, generate memes, and assist users directly on the platform.
How Much Does Grok 3 Cost?
To access Grok 3, users need to subscribe to X Premium+, which now costs $40 per month. A more advanced subscription plan, called SuperGrok, will soon be introduced, offering extra features like DeepSearch, Think Mode, and higher image generation limits. SuperGrok is expected to cost $30 per month or $300 per year.
Where Can You Access Grok 3?
If you have an X Premium+ subscription, you can use Grok 3 through:
- The Grok website
- The Grok iOS app
- The Grok chat interface on X
- An upcoming Grok Android app (available for pre-registration on Google Play)
Grok 3 will also be available via xAI’s API, though it’s still in beta. Additionally, “Voice Mode,” which allows users to speak prompts and hear responses, is expected to launch within a week.
